New Image Wednesday + Infamous Stringdusters

I’m super pumped about this week’s blog. It’s featuring a little bit of the work I’ve done for the new record by the Infamous Stringdusters, “Ladies and Gentlemen” (link below).

Have you heard these guys? They’re incredible. Literally incredible. I remember first meeting them years ago when my old band, Boulder Acoustic Society was still playing. We shared a stage with them multiple times at Four Corners Folk Festival in Pagosa Springs, CO. I remember just being blown away with how absolutely virtuosic each member in the band was. So, when the call came to do some artwork for them, I totally jumped at the chance.

It’s been such a fun project! I had less than a week to crank out the album cover. As you can see up above, I pitched a simple sketch of the concept and once it got OK’d I had the shot finished within three days. Special thanks to Madelyn Albright, Adam Becker-Hafnor, and the Gauerke family up in Sunnyside. You’ve seen Madelyn and Adam before in some of my work. Both were featured in the “Sophisticated Party” photos I did for Rocky Mountain Table Company. Outside of that, as my style changes so much from band to band, I try to keep one common thread between my images…Madelyn. She’s been on a ton of album covers that I’ve worked on. I’m so grateful for the two of them. Chad and Jennifer Gauerke were instrumental in the album cover even coming out. I traveled the state for two full days looking for a house that would match the concept. While searching for the house, I was also reaching out to friends with kids to see if we could get a couple of talented actors for the cover photo. The Gauerke’s were amazing as they provided both the house and their incredible kids, Quinn and Celia.

It was a killer shoot. Only taking a few hours, we had Adam and Madelyn up on ladders way up in the air, and climbing pads on the ground in case Quinn fell all fifteen feet down out of the tree. We set up multiple lights and shot away.

The second shoot for the record featured the band themselves. While they’ll use them for promotional photos as well, I wanted to make sure to have a new image of them in the record design somewhere. We were lucky enough to gain access to Syntax Physic Opera. I love that place. It has such a great vibe inside and holds lots of killer photo locations. Assisted by my friend Merne Judson III again, we planned on four shots and set up lighting for each so we could go from one shot to the next quickly.

Overall, I’m extremely happy with how everything turned out. It feels like I’ve forged some killer new friendships from this series of photos and that’s always my favorite. I hope you enjoy!

See you all tonight at Office Hours! As always, thanks so much for reading and checking out my stuff!
